Health Disparities

MTOP researchers are committed to better understanding the and mitigating the increased severity and chronicity of PTSD observed among racial and ethnic minority individuals. Specifically, our team investigates the underlying mechanisms that contribute to mental illness, including PTSD and depression, among racial and ethnic minorities exposed to trauma and stress. To this end, we employ an interdisciplinary and multi-systems approach by integrating neighborhood-level factors, such as exposure to community violence and social cohesion, along with biological variables, namely allostatic load, epigenetics, and microbiome, to identify the vulnerability pathways associated with conditional risk of experiencing PTSD. Such a comprehensive approach facilitates avenues for effective intervention and prevention efforts at a community and individual level.
